2- Why would you need to use a strop?
The edge of the blade is very thin, so thin in fact that the density of hair is enough to cause small indentations in the blade. These indentations can become more predominant with further usage and eventually create a dull, uneven shave edge. This will cause nicking of the skin and an uneven shave with continued use. More frequent honing = less blade life. In order to maintain a nicely honed edge, stropping will smooth these indentations and the benefit is a close, smooth shave for much longer between honing sessions; also increase the life expectancy of your straight razor.
3- How do you use a strop?
You hold the beveled edge against the canvas surface of the strop with light pressure and move the blade away from the cutting edge. Turn the blade over and do the same on the other side. (The canvas side will warm the edge, cleaning it and making it more malleable). Mimic this motion on the leather side. The process is the same on any strop. It is important to make approximately 30-50 passes (15-25 for each side). By doing this before each use, you will restore the honed edge and maintain a smooth blade edge for the optimal shave closeness.
4 -What are the step to take to shave with a straight razor?
Prepping your skin before shaving is necessary to get a close, comfortable shave. You will want your hair follicles soft and your pores to be open. It is best to take a hot shower or wrap your face in a hot towel. Give it a few minutes to allow your pores to open and all of your facial hair to soften.
Pre-shave oil provides a lubricated, protective layer. If your skin is sensitive, this will help prevent razor burn. After applying warm shaving cream for a close and comfortable shave, start shaving at the top of your face on your dominant hand side. Hold the blade at about a 30-degree angle. With your opposite hand, gently pull the skin up to create a smoother surface. Using very little pressure, slowly and carefully shave with the grain (in short, smooth strokes) until you reach the jawline, always trying to make the skin on the shaving surface as tight as possible while still comfortable. Take extra care when shaving beneath the chin and jawline. Use your opposite hand to pull the skin down for a closer shave. After you have made a full pass going with the grain, multiple passes will make for an even closer shave. After re-lathering with shaving cream, continue by going across the grain even more gently than before and finish with a very gentle sweep against the grain.
Rinse your face with cold water, towel blot and dab on a bit of aftershave balm to revitalize and soothe your skin. Remember, the best way to get a close shave is with a sharp blade, and
